  • Wildlife Disease Ecology: Linking Theory to Data and Application (Ecological Reviews)

    Just like humans, animals and plants suffer from infectious diseases, which can critically threaten biodiversity. This book describes key studies that have driven our understanding of the ecology and evolution of wildlife diseases. Each chapter introduces the host and disease, and explains how that system has aided our general understanding of the evolution and spread of wildlife diseases, through the development and testing of important epidemiological and evolutionary theories. Questions addressed include: How do hosts and parasites co-evolve? What determines how fast a disease spreads through a population? How do co-infecting parasites interact? Why do hosts vary in parasite burden? Which factors determine parasite virulence and host resistance? How do parasites influence the spread of invasive species? How do we control infectious diseases in wildlife? This book will provide a valuable introduction to students new to the topic, and novel insights to researchers, professionals and policymakers working in the field.

  • Peter Doig (Rizzoli Classics): -compact edition-

    05
    In every generation of artists, there are a few who propose a new set of ques- tions and alter the way we understand art. Peter Doig is such an artist. This handsome monograph considers the painter’s entire career, beginning with the early work produced in the 1990s when Doig’s enigmatic but wholly new conception of painting was first introduced to audiences. Doig was born to Scottish parents, spent several years as a child in Trinidad, later settling in Canada for his formative early teen years. He found his voice while at art school in London, albeit one that was out of step with the work of the time (much of it installation-based and dripping with neo-conceptualist leanings). He had developed a small following of fellow artists and critics when the rest of the art world caught up and took notice. In 2002, he left London for Trinidad, where he has remained. The small Caribbean island-with its own distinctive light and landscape-has deeply influenced his recent work. This volume was designed in close collaboration with the artist, with a cover and various interior elements created especially by the artist.

  • Frank Auerbach: Revised and Expanded Edition

    03
    This is the most comprehensive monograph to date on the Frank Auerbach (b. 1931), one of the preeminent artists of our age, widely admired for his vivid, impulsive depictions of the world around him. Often compared to Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud in terms of the revolutionary and powerful nature of his work, Auerbach s depictions of people and the urban landscapes near his London studio make him one of the greatest painters alive today. Spanning the length of his career from the 1950s to the present, this expanded edition includes 250 additional works bringing it up to date. In the back of the book there are small-scale chronological sequencing of full-colour reproductions, which depict nearly every painting made by the artist, from his student years up until this publication. At age 90, he looks back over his life and his work, rich with breakthroughs in painting and masterful individuality. The constant painter: a rare interview with Frank Auerbach A weighty monograph filled with photographs of his life s work, written by William Feaver, is published [and] underscore his position as a Grand Old Man of British Painting. –London Evening Standard This definitive account of Auerbach s work and life includes excellent large-scale reproductions of 200 paintings and an illustrated catalogue of some 1,000 more, lively, pertinent interpretations from Feaver, the artist s long-term friend, critical supporter and model, and engaging interviews and photographs. • Peter Doig

    Accompanying a major exhibition of new and recent works by Peter Doig at The Courtauld, London, this publication will present an exciting new chapter in the career of one of the most celebrated and important painters working today. It will include paintings and etchings created since the artist’s move from Trinidad to London in 2021. It includes a major group of large paintings made for this exhibition.

    Doig (born Edinburgh, 1959) is widely acknowledged as one of the world’s leading artists. He secured his early reputation in the 1990s as a highly original figurative painter, producing large-scale, immersive landscape paintings that exist somewhere between actual places and the realms of the imagination. Layered into his paintings is a rich array of inspirations, such as scenes from films, album covers, and the art of the past. His works are often related to the places where he has lived and worked, including the UK, Canada and Trinidad. In 2021, Doig moved back to London where he has set up a new studio. This new studio has become the crucible for developing paintings started in Trinidad and New York and elsewhere, which are being worked up alongside completely fresh paintings, including a new London subject. The works produced for the exhibition at The Courtauld convey this particularly creative experience, as Doig explores a rich variety of places, people, memories and ways of painting that have accompanied him to his new London studio. For Doig, printmaking is an integral part of his artistic life: his prints and his paintings often work in dialogue with one another. The exhibition and catalogue will also showcase the artist’s work as a printmaker by unveiling a new series of etchings that Doig has made in response to poems by his friend, the Nobel prize winning poet Derek Walcott (1930-2017). This will allow readers to consider the full span of Doig’s creative process. Doig has long admired the collection of The Courtauld Gallery. The Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists who are at its heart have been a touchstone for his own painting and printmaking over the course of his career. His works presented here will reflect his current artistic preoccupations and readers will be able to consider Doig’s contemporary works in the light of paintings by earlier artists in The Courtauld’s collection that are important for him, such as those by Cézanne, Gauguin, Manet, Monet, Pissarro and Van Gogh. The publication will explore how Doig recasts and reinvents traditions and practices of painting to create his own highly distinctive works.

  • Franz Bucher. Picture Fields: Bildfelder: Bildfelder / Picture Fields

    • First monograph in English on Swiss painter Franz Bucher
    • Illuminates and analyses Franz Bucher’s oeuvre as a whole against a backdrop of his recent works
    • Richly illustrated, featuring numerous previously unpublished works
    • Text in English and German

    In recent years, Swiss artist Franz Bucher, born in 1940, has produced an extensive series of paintings which he simply titles Fields: lavender, dandelion, rapeseed, and poppy fields congruent with the canvas to form a pictorial field. Yet Bucher’s objective is not primarily the pictorial. Rather, it is more about the two-dimensional space which is given an inherent structure by the largely monochromatic primary colours he uses, as well as his dynamic brushstroke. It becomes apparent that most of the artist’s oeuvre since the early 1970s has been determined by the metrical rhythm in his use of colour. Bucher’s paintings constitute actual energy fields.

    This new monograph offers a retrospective of Bucher’s entire body of work from the vantage point of his recent pictorial fields. It thus illustrates his true artistic intentions independently of the context of his chosen motifs.

  • Rattan: A World of Elegance and Charm

    03
    Rattan furnishings evoke the glamour and laid back elegance of exotic beach houses as well as the informal beauty of plant filled garden rooms and sun dappled verandas. Long fascinated with rattan s versatility, designer Lulu Lytle examines the enduring appeal of this sustainable tropical palm in RATTAN: A WORLD OF ELEGANCE AND CHARM. The first book in decades to examine the history and craftsmanship of rattan furniture, this insightful tome showcases rattan’s appeal through archival images of beautiful interiors including Madeleine Castaing’s winter garden in Paris, Michael Taylor’s own Californian beach house, the Titanic’s Café Parisian and the Billy Baldwin designed Mr. Kennedy’s beauty salon in New York City. Rattan’s many personalities are explored through its inclusion in settings as diverse as Impressionist paintings, flamboyant nightclubs and pared down contemporary drawing rooms.

    A reflection of its inherent beauty and longevity, antique rattan furniture from the nineteenth century is highly collectible, as are rattan pieces created by giants of modern design such as Josef Hoffmann for Thonet, Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn, Jean-Michel Frank for Ecart, Renzo Mongiardino for Bonacina, Arne Jacobsen for Sika, Paul Frankl and Donald Deskey. Rattan pieces have become iconic and highly prized, including Hiroomi Tahara’s Wrap Sofa, Franca Helg’s Primavera Chair, and the many iterations of the beloved Peacock Chair. RATTAN also highlights some of the many tastemakers who have embraced rattan from Marella Agnelli, Babe Paley, and Cecil Beaton to leading interior designers including Jeffrey Bilhuber, Veere Grenney, Axel Vervoordt, and Jacques Grange.

        Christians living and ministering in Muslim contexts, even as early as the 7th century, have always adapted their language and public witness to cultural and religious sensibilities of their audience. As theologians, missiologists, and practitioners seek to think carefully about issues surrounding such contextualization, one of the most important considerations concerns the translation of terms and phrases, such as “Son of God” or whether to use “Allah” to refer to God. This project aims to bring together leading voices in the discussion, representing a spectrum of approaches, to explore the issues surrounding “Muslim Idiom Translation.” It will also uniquely consider the voices of practitioners of ministry to Muslims and Bible translation, as well as cultural natives to Islamic contexts.

        Combining 25 years of clinical, research and teaching experience, Dr Lisa Harvey provides an innovative 5-step approach to the physiotherapy management of people with spinal cord injury. Based on the International Classification of Functioning, this approach emphasises the importance of setting goals which are purposeful and meaningful to the patient. These goals are related to performance of motor tasks analysed in terms of 6 key impairments. The assessment and treatment performance of each of these impairments for people with spinal cord injury is described in the following chapters:

        • training motor tasks
        • strength training
        • contracture management
        • pain management
        • respiratory management
        • cardiovascular fitness training

        Dr Harvey develops readers’ problem-solving skills equipping them to manage all types of spinal cord injuries. Central to these skills is an understanding of how people with different patterns of paralysis perform motor tasks and the importance of differentmuscles for motor tasks such as:

        • transfers and bed mobility of people
        • wheelchair mobility
        • hand function for people with tetraplegia
        • standing and walking with lower limb paralysis

      • Lost in Space Technical Handbook

        01
        The Lost in Space Technical Handbook is the culmination of decades of research by author/artist Ron Gross into the compelling hardware seen on the classic TV series Lost in Space. The brilliantly diverse hardware of the show is represented objectively, in a “studio production” type of format. Many original special effects “secrets” are now revealed. This new book, now a full 35+ years in the making, finally completes the three volume set devoted to Lost in Space and the other Irwin Allen TV properties as initially conceived by the author.

        There are a total of 50 technical blueprint views in this 160 page volume, some of which have been duplicated in a dramatic colored line-on-black scheme. The book covers the Jupiter 2, The Robot, The Chariot, the Space Pod, weaponry, and an assortment of accessory hardware. A final chapter also covers selected “alien” technology and related props. Finally, this officially licensed project has been augmented by Ron’s other supporting artwork, and selected contributions from well known artisans such as Bill Hedges, Tom Pfrogner (of “Collector’s Call” fame), and several others. It even includes a special chapter on custom scale modeling options based on the original studio props and plans.

        The Lost in Space Technical Handbook is a companion volume to Ron Gross’s first two books on the Amazon platform, “Fantasy Worlds Beyond: The Irwin Allen Art of Ron Gross,” and “Lost in Space: The Initial Adventures.” Ron first became aware of Lost in Space at age eleven, when the first promo for the show was broadcast by CBS in the summer of 1965. Lost in Space continued to capture Ron’s imagination into adulthood, which resulted in various scratch-built modeling projects, and box cover art contributions to Irwin Allen-based model kits. Today Ron is officially licensed to create new graphic materials based on the Irwin Allen sci-fi television properties.

        The newest addition to the best-selling All the Songs series details the unique recording history of Pink Floyd, one of the world’s most commercially successful and influential rock bands.

In Pink Floyd All the Songs, authors Margotin and Guesdon describe the origin of their nearly 200 released songs, details from the recording studio, what instruments were used, and behind-the-scenes stories of the tensions that helped drive the band.

Packed with more than 500 photos, All the Songs is also filled with stories fans treasure, such as Waters working with engineer Alan Parsons to employ revolutionary recording techniques for The Dark Side of the Moon at Abbey Road Studios in 1972 or producer Bob’s Ezrin’s contribution in refining Water’s original sprawling vision for The Wall.

      • Architect’s Legal Handbook: The Law for Architects

        01

        The Architect’s Legal Handbook is the most widely used reference on the law for practicing architects and the established textbook on law for architectural students.

        Since the last edition of this book in 2010, the legal landscape in which architecture is practised has changed significantly: the long-standing procurement model with an architect as contract administrator has been challenged by the growing popularity of design and build contracts, contract notices in place of certificates, and novation of architect’s duties.

        The tenth edition features all the latest developments in the law which affect an architect’s work, as well as providing comprehensive coverage of relevant UK law topics. Key highlights of this edition include:

          • an overview of the legal environment, including contract, tort, and land law;
          • analysis of the statutory framework, including planning law, health and safety, construction legislation, and building regulations in the post-Grenfell legal landscape;
          • procurement and the major industry construction contract forms;
          • building dispute resolution, including litigation, arbitration, adjudication, and mediation;
          • key fields for the architect in practice, including architects’ registration and professional conduct, contracts with clients and collateral warranties, liability in negligence, and insurance;
          • entirely new chapters on various standard form contracts, architects’ responsibility for the work of others, disciplinary proceedings, and data protection;
          • tables of cases, legislation, statutes, and statutory instruments give a full overview of references cited in the text.

          The Architect’s Legal Handbook is the essential legal reference work for all architects and students of architecture.
