• Tree and Serpent: Early Buddhist Art in India

With new photography of extraordinarily rare works of art, this pioneering study features discoveries and research essential to understanding the origins and meaning of Buddhist artistic traditions

Named for two primary motifs in Buddhist art, the sacred bodhi tree and the protective snake, Tree & Serpent: Early Buddhist Art in India is the first publication to foreground devotional works produced in the Deccan from 200 BCE to 400 CE. Unlike traditional narratives, which focus on northern India (where the Buddha was born, taught, and died), this groundbreaking book presents Buddhist art from monastic sites in the south. Long neglected, this is among the earliest corpus of Buddhist art surviving, and among the most sublimely beautiful. An international team of researchers contributes new scholarship on the sculptural and devotional art associated with Buddhism, and masterpieces from recently excavated Buddhist sites are published here for the first time―including Kanaganahalli and Phanigiri, the most important new discoveries in a generation. With its exploration of Buddhism’s emergence in southern India, as well as of India’s deep commercial and cultural engagement with the Hellenized and Roman worlds, the definitive study expands our understanding of the origins of Buddhist art itself.

  • Linguistic Coping Strategies in Sign Language Interpreting (Studies in Interpretation Book 14)

    01
This ground-breaking work, originally published 15 years ago, continues to serve as the primary reference on the theories of omission potential and translational contact in sign language interpreting. In the book, noted scholar Jemina Napier explores the linguistic coping strategies of interpreters by drawing on her own study of the interpretation of a university lecture from English into Australian Sign Language (Auslan). A new preface by the author provides perspective on the importance of the work and how it fits within the scholarship of interpretation studies.

The concept of strategic omissions is explored here as a tool that is consciously used by interpreters as a coping strategy. Instead of being a mistake, omitting part of the source language can actually be part of an active decision-making process that allows the interpreter to convey the correct meaning when faced with challenges. For the first time, Napier found that omission potential existed within every interpretation and, furthermore, she proposed a new taxonomy of five different conscious and unconscious omission types. Her findings also indicate that Auslan/English interpreters use both a free and literal interpretation approach, but that those who use a free approach occasionally switch to a literal approach as a linguistic coping strategy to provide access to English terminology. Both coping strategies help negotiate the demands of interpretation, whether it be lack of subject-matter expertise, dealing with dense material, or the context of the situation.

Napier also analyzes the interpreters’ reflections on their decision-making processes as well as the university students’ perceptions and preferences of their interpreters’ linguistic choices and styles. Linguistic Coping Strategies in Sign Language Interpreting is a foundational text in interpretation studies that can be applied to interpreting in different contexts and to interpreter training.

  • Slim Aarons: Style

    01

Glamorous fashions, personalities, and places captured by iconic photographer Slim Aarons

Slim Aarons, at least according to the man himself, did not photograph fashion: “I didn’t do fashion. I did the people in their clothes that became the fashion.” But despite what he claimed, Aarons’s work is indelibly tied to fashion. Aarons’s incredibly influential photographs of high society and socialites being unambiguously themselves are still a source of inspiration for modern day style icons.

Slim Aarons: Style showcases the photographs that both recorded and influenced the luminaries of the fashion world. This volume features early black-and-white fashion photography, as well as portraits of the fashionable elite―like Jacqueline de Ribes, C.Z. Guest, Nan Kempner, and Marisa Berenson―and those that designed the clothes, such as Oscar de la Renta, Emilio Pucci, Mary McFadden, and Lilly Pulitzer. Featuring some never-before-seen images and detailed captions written by fashion historians, Slim Aarons: Style is a collection of the photographer’s most stylish work.

  • Charles Bargue and Jean-Léon Gérôme: Drawing Course

    04
    • Two hundred lithographs that comprised a famous late nineteenth-century drawing course
    • Introduces the work of a hitherto neglected master: Charles Bargue
    • Of interest to artists, art students, art historians, and lovers and collectors of art

The Bargue-Gérôme Drawing Course is a complete reprint of a famous, late nineteenth-century drawing course. It contains a set of almost two hundred masterful lithographs of subjects for copying by drawing students before they attempt drawing from life or nature. Consequently it is a book that will interest artists, art students, art historians, and lovers and collectors of drawings. It also introduces us to the work and life of a hitherto neglected master: Charles Bargue.

The Drawing Course consists of three sections. The first consists of plates drawn after casts, usually of antique examples. Different parts of the body are studied in order of difficulty, until full figures are presented. The second section pays homage to the western school of painting, with lithographs after exemplary drawings by Renaissance and modern masters. The third part contains almost 60 académies, or drawings after nude male models, all original inventions by Bargue, the lithographer. With great care, the student is introduced to continually more difficult problems in the close observing and recording of nature.

Charles Bargue started his career as a lithographer of drawings by hack artists for a popular market in comic, sentimental and soft-porn subjects. By working with Gérôme, and in preparing the plates for the course, Bargue was transformed into a spectacular painter of single figures and intimate scenes; a master of precious details that always remain observation and never became self-conscious virtuosity, and colour schemes that unified his composition in exquisite tonal harmonies. The last part of the book is a biography of Bargue, along with a preliminary catalogue of his paintings, accompanied by reproductions of all that have been found and of many of those lost.

  • Ando. Complete Works 1975–Today. 2019 Edition

    02

Discover the completely unique aesthetic of Tadao Ando, the only architect ever to have won the discipline’s four most prestigious prizes: the Pritzker, Carlsberg, Praemium Imperiale, and Kyoto Prize.

Philippe Starck defines him as a “mystic in a country which is no longer mystic.” Philip Drew calls his buildings “land art” as they “struggle to emerge from the earth.” His designs have been described as haiku crafted from concrete, water, light, and space. But to Ando, true architecture is not expressed in metaphysics or beauty, but rather through space that embodies physical wisdom.

This thoroughly updated edition spans the breadth of his entire career, including such stunning new projects as the Shanghai Poly Theater and the Clark Center at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Each project is profiled through photographs and architectural drawings to explore Ando’s unprecedented use of concrete, wood, water, light, space, and natural forms. Based on the massive XXL monograph, this edition brings the architect’s definitive career overview to an accessible format.

  • The Walt Disney Film Archives. The Animated Movies 1921–1968

    02

One of the most creative minds of the 20th century, Walt Disney created a unique and unrivaled imaginative universe. Like scarcely any other classics of cinema, his astonishing collection of animated cartoons revolutionized storytelling on screen and enchant to this day across geographies and generations. In TASCHEN’s first volume of one of the most expansive illustrated publications on Disney animation, some 1,500 images and essays by eminent Disney experts take us to the beating heart of the studio’s “Golden Age of Animation.” This landmark book traces Disney’s complete animation journey from the silent film era, through his first full-length feature Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and the pioneering artistic experiment Fantasia (1940), right up to his last masterpieces Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree (1966) and The Jungle Book (1967). With extensive research conducted through the historical collections of the Walt Disney Company, as well as private collections, editor Daniel Kothenschulte curates some of the most precious concept paintings and storyboards to reveal just how these animation masterpieces came to life. Masterful cel setups provide highly detailed illustrations of famous film scenes while rare pictures taken by Disney photographers and excerpts from story conferences between Walt and his staff bring a privileged insider’s view to the studio’s creative process. Each of the major animated features that were made during Walt’s lifetime―including Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, and One Hundred and One Dalmatians―are given their own focus chapter, without forgetting less familiar gems such as the experimental short films of the Silly Symphonies series and underappreciated episodic musical films such as Make Mine Music and Melody Time, all of which receive the same meticulous research and attention. Many unfinished projects, among them the proposed sequels to the legendary musical Fantasia or a homage to Davy Crockett by painter Thomas Hart Benton, are also highlighted with rarely seen artworks, many of them previously unpublished. Throughout, contributions from leading Disney specialists detail the evolution of each respective film. Realizing the Disney style was a collective project and, as much as the master himself, The Walt Disney Film Archives acknowledges the outstanding animators and designers who influenced the style of the studio, among them Albert Hurter, Gustaf Tenggren, Kay Nielsen, Carl Barks, Mary Blair, Sylvia Holland, Tyrus Wong, Ken Anderson, Eyvind Earle, and Walt Peregoy. • Virgil Abloh. Nike. ICONS

    08

In 2016, sportswear manufacturer Nike and fashion designer Virgil Abloh joined forces to create a sneaker collection celebrating 10 of the Oregon-based company’s most iconic shoes. With their project The Ten―which reimagined icons like Air Jordan 1, Air Max 90, Air Force 1, and Air Presto, among others―they reinvigorated sneaker culture.

Virgil Abloh’s designs offer deep insights into engineering ingenuity and burst with cultural cachet. Drawing on the genius of the original shoe using lettering, ironic labels, collage, and sculpting techniques, Abloh played with language and sculptural elements to construct new meaning. Inspired by the wit of Dadaism, architectural theory, and avant-garde happenings, he analyzed what makes each shoe iconic and deconstructed it into an artistic assemblage, making each shoe into a piece of industrial design, a readymade sculpture, and a wearable all at once.

ICONS traces Abloh’s investigative, creative process through documentation of the prototypes, original text messages from Abloh to Nike designers, and treasures from the Nike archives. We find Swooshes sliced away from Air Jordans and reapplied with tape or thread, Abloh’s typical text fragments in quotation marks on Air Force 1, and All Stars cut into pieces. We take a look behind the scenes and witness Abloh’s DIY approach, which gave each model in the Off-WhiteTM c/o Nike collection its own unique touch. His deconstructive vocabulary is reflected in the Swiss binding, which showcases an open spine and discloses the production of the book.

The book documents Abloh’s cooperative way of working and reaffirms the power of print. For its design Nike and Abloh partnered with the acclaimed London-based design studio Zak Group. Together they conceived a two-part compendium, equal parts catalog and conceptual toolbox. The first part of the book presents a visual culture of sneakers while a lexicon in the second part defines the key people, places, objects, ideas, materials, and scenes from which the project grew. Texts by Nike’s Nicholas Schonberger, writer Troy Patterson, curator and historian Glenn Adamson, and Virgil Abloh himself frame the collaborative work within fashion and design history. A foreword by Hiroshi Fujiwara places the project within the historical continuum of Nike collaborators.

  • Fundamental Dishonesty and QOCS in Personal Injury Proceedings: Law and Practice

Dishonest claims and dishonest claimants (or at least allegedly dishonest claims and claimants) are by no means a novel phenomenon in personal injury claims; nor is the insurance industry’s desire to identify and expose such claims and such individuals. However, the legal framework surrounding allegations of dishonesty, the frequency with which they are made, and (at least in part) the reasoning and impetus behind making them, has taken on a different complexion following the introduction of the concept of ‘fundamental dishonesty’ into personal injury litigation.

It is no exaggeration to say that for every practitioner involved in personal injury claims, a comprehensive understanding of the notion of ‘fundamental dishonesty’, both as it relates to Qualified One Way Costs Shifting (“QOCS”) and as it relates to s. 57 of the Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015, is absolutely essential. It is simply not possible to carry on practice in this area of the law without an intimate working knowledge of these principles and how they apply in real terms.

Since ‘fundamental dishonesty’ first arrived on the scene on the 1st April 2013 as an exception to the QOCS regime, the concept has continued to develop and expand in its reach and application. Most importantly the term has been adopted within s. 57 of the Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015; a significant piece of legislation representing a fundamental change to the law as it stood following the Supreme Court’s decision in Summers v Fairclough Homes.

Written with both claimant and defendant practitioners in mind, this book seeks to consider what it actually means to be ‘fundamentally dishonest’; to identify the relevant Civil Procedure Rules in play; to look at the costs consequences of a finding of ‘fundamental dishonesty’; to trace the origins of s. 57 and consider the wording and effect of the statutory provision; to discuss the principles expounded in the most relevant cases; to analyse the procedures and processes to be adopted when making or defending allegations of ‘fundamental dishonesty’, including how and when an application for a finding can and should be made; and to provide helpful insight and commentary from a practical perspective.

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jake Rowley is a barrister at Farrar’s Building specialising in high value personal injury litigation. His experience spans the full spectrum of such claims including those arising from road traffic accidents; employer’s liability; public liability; and occupier’s liability claims. His clients include private individuals, local authorities, major UK insurance companies, well-known national and international commercial entities, and National Governments.

Jake has a particular interest in, and significant experience of, cases involving allegations of fraud and/or fundamental dishonesty. A substantial proportion of Jake’s caseload involves accusations of dishonesty including, allegedly fabricated accidents; staged or induced collisions; phantom passenger/occupancy cases; low-velocity impacts; ‘late presentation’ claims; malingering; and fabricated or exaggerated injuries. Jake brings a meticulous and forensic approach to his consideration of the evidence and prides himself on conducting thorough and robust cross-examinations at trial. Jake is regularly invited to speak or provide training on the law and practice relating to fundamental dishonesty to both solicitors and insurers.

      • The Illustrated Journey: Sixty Years Through Space and Time

‘It all started out as a mild curiosity in a junk-yard, and now it’s turned out to be quite a great spirit of adventure don’t you think?’ … so spoke the Doctor during Doctor Who‘s first season, and from that ‘mild curiosity’ the show has gone on to explore strange new worlds in this universe and others, taking in all times and places along the way.

For Doctor Who‘s sixtieth anniversary, we considered that perhaps the best way to celebrate would be to remind ourselves of all the adventure, thrills, alien species, monsters, villains, companions and excitement that the Doctor has experienced on his many travels, all with his most faithful of companions, the TARDIS, by his side. Sometimes ‘the old girl’ gets left behind, or sidestepped in time, but most often she is there at the start, and again at the end, waiting patiently for the Doctor and his friends to return in order to whisk them all off somewhere else, where more adventure awaits.

And what better guide than the incredible artwork of Daryl Joyce. Joyce has been at the forefront of Doctor Who artwork for many years, creating imagery to accompany many tie-in works, but this is the first time that a work of this magnitude has been attempted … trying to encapsulate most of the Doctors adventures and voyages in one book. We did consider trying to cover them all, but the book would have ended up twice the size – unmanageable – so with Daryl’s help we have filtered and filletted the journeys and present the majority … with a few additional sidesteps and images along the way, all to celebrate sixty amazing years of travel in time and space …

‘From the misty streets of Shoreditch in 1963, to dark and spooky planets via ancient Rome, Troy and literally hundreds of locations in between,’ explained Joyce. ‘The aim was to respectfully up the scale, bring the imagination to life and give it all the gothic polish that Robert Holmes inspired in my appreciation of Doctor Who.’

Join us for an adventure through memory, to scenes and places explored and encountered by the Doctor and his friends …

And here’s to many more years to come!

PLEASE NOTE: THIS BOOK IS BOUND ON THE LONG EDGE, BUT IT’S INTENDED TO BE VIEWED WITH THE BOUND EDGE AT THE TOP!

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING (REVIEWS OF THE HARDBACK EDITION):

‘The Illustrated Journey offers art that inspires and intrigues, as you always hope art will, when bringing a favourite show or subject to life. I can see fans returning to savour this collection again and again, spotting some new aspect of Daryl’s work each time.’ John Freeman, Down the Tubes

‘If you are a fan of Doctor Who, or just fantasy artwork in general, then The Illustrated Journey by Daryl Joyce is an absolute must. The breadth of artistic imagination and technical skill displayed across its 336 pages is simply breathtaking.’ Mike Tucker

‘I finished reading this book last night (if “reading” is the right word for an art book), and wanted to say how magnificent it is. The artwork is gorgeous – the composition, light and colour are simply beautiful. The book plays to Joyce’s strengths as an artist, and the way he encapsulates the essence of each story into his paintings is an absolute joy. Highly recommended.’ JAMES C MCFETRIDGE

‘Wanted to add my words of appreciation about this amazing book. I did hesitate to purchase it at first because of the price and thought twice about it once I had it in the shopping cart on the Telos site, but I’m so glad I bought it. It’s beautiful and must be one of my favourite Who books. The mind boggles at the amount of work Daryl Joyce must have put into it, there are hundreds of pieces of gorgeous art. It reminds me of those Sci-Fi art books I used to get at Christmas about space travel and aliens that were full of paperback cover art. I loved those books and I love this.’ GAVIN23

Now back in print, a revealing look at the visionary French furniture designer and architect, highlighting his virtuoso designs and versatile creativity

“Pierre Chareau: Modern Architecture and Design adds even more depth and breadth to the architect’s deserved reputation for creative virtuosity.”―Julie V. Iovine, Wall Street Journal

“[A]n exceptionally informative, readable catalog.”―Roberta Smith, New York Times

The designer and architect Pierre Chareau (1883–1950) was a pivotal figure in modernism. His extraordinary Art Deco furniture is avidly collected and his visionary glass house, the Maison de Verre, is celebrated, but the breadth of his design genius has been little explored. Chareau linked architecture, fine arts, and style; designed furniture for avant-garde films and chic homes; collected artists such as Picasso and Mondrian; and was a radical innovator in the use of materials. This revealing look at the visionary French designer highlights his virtuosity and versatile creativity. Essays by leading scholars embrace the full scope of his invention, offering detailed analyses of individual projects, the interdisciplinary nature of his work, his Jewish background, his place in the avant-garde of Paris between the wars, and his more recent reception. Extensive illustrations present a rich sampling of Chareau’s furniture, architecture, interiors, fabrics, and wallpapers, as well as his own important art collection.
